12/24/09.....We're on baby Camel Watch!! Patsy our Dromedary Camel and star of Animal Planet's "Growing Up Camel" is about to give birth. For those who don't know Patsy's story... Patsy was born on a cold winter day and she had a rough start at life. Under the care of Dr. Brewer, Betsey Brewer, and the staff here at Southwick's Zoo, Patsy thrived. She was re-introduced to her mother only to have her mother pass away from bone cancer a few short months later. Now, Patsy is about to become a mom herself! We are very excited and hope for a healthy delivery! Dr. Brewer is watching her very closely and hopefully we'll have a happy, healthy, baby camel and momma in the New Year! We'll keep you posted!

Baby Chimpanzee is born at Southwick's Zoo! 10/18/09 UPDATE
Tanzie, who is almost 8 months old is doing great and starting to venture off mom a little bit. Mom doesn't let her go too far, but it is fun to watch her play in the grass or frolic with her mom!
Southwick's Zoo is proud to announce the birth of a chimpanzee on March 6, 2009. We are very pleased about the birth and mother and baby are doing great! The mother chimpanzee is very protective of her baby and and the she is a very good mom. New England has known very few chimpanzee births and we are excited to be able to watch the interaction between baby, mom and the other chimpanzees as the baby grows and lives in our beautiful chimpanzee habitat!

3/04/09 Baby Giraffe is home! 10/18/09 UPDATE
Molly is almost 9 months old now and is growing so tall!! She is a healthy, gentle giraffe who is full of curiosity. She is very aware of her surroundings and very curious of people. She'll be moved inside for the winter with an option to go outside on the warmer weather days. Each day we are amazed at her strength and growth!
The baby Giraffe returned home today after a brief stay at Tufts. She is now 9 days old. She has grown about a foot and is now over 5 feet tall and has gained 20 lbs! She is doing great and is very active. She practices walking and galloping. She is also working on stopping after her gallop. Sometimes she stops short and other times she slides to a stop. It is very fun to watch. She is also alert and curious. Here are some pictures of her first day back at the zoo!

2/27/09 Baby Giraffe
On Monday February 23, 2009 just after dawn, a little girl giraffe was born at Southwick's Zoo. Shortly after the birth, it was apparent that measures had to be taken to ensure her survival. The giraffe's mother was not producing milk and she was very weak. Dr. Peter Brewer, DVM immediately began the process of feeding the baby colostrum (a milk with a lot of nutrients and antibodies primarily for newborns and is critical to their survival). However, early Wednesday morning, Dr. Brewer knew that she was not gaining strength or drinking enough colostrum. He decided that she needed to be brought to Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine so she be able to receive the best possible chance for survival with their 24 hour staff, rapid lab results, and further veterinary resources. As Dr. Brewer supposed, the staff at Tufts ascertained that she had a low white blood cell count and was dehydrated. She is currently being treated with a course of antibiotics and changed her formula. The latest reports from Tufts is that she is rapidly gaining strength and appetite. She is getting up on her own and walking. We are very optimistic and we hope she will be able to come home soon. Unfortunately, when the baby comes back to the zoo, she won't be able to live with the other giraffes until she is weaned. Once she is weaned, we hope to reunite her with the Mother, Father, and Aunt. We want to thank Tufts for their excellent care of the baby and to all of you who have expressed your concern and well wishes.
