Facts for the Western Hognose Snake, found at Earth Discovery Center at Southwick's Zoo in Mendon MADid You Know?

  • This snake’s most distinguishing feature is its upturned nose. They use their nose to burrow in search of prey.
  • Western hognose snakes rarely bite. However, when they feel threatened they will rear back and puff up their body and hiss. If this bluff does not work, they expose their black belly and play dead. The black on their underside is supposed to mimic rotting flesh.
