Facts for the African Hedgehog, found at Earth Discovery Center at Southwick's Zoo in Mendon MADid You Know?

  • Hedgehogs have quills for defense, however they are not related to porcupines. The quills of a hedgehog are not easily released from its body. If it feels threatened, a hedgehog will roll into a ball so its quills stick out to protect their face, limbs, and belly.
  • Hedgehogs are opportunistic eaters with high tolerance to toxins. They have been known to eat scorpions and venomous snakes.
