Mad About Monkeys Day

We’re mad about monkeys (and apes!) here at Southwick’s Zoo! We have many different species of monkeys and apes here at the zoo, so on June 1st we’re going to have a special primate themed day. Mad About Monkeys Day is day long and is regular zoo admission. EARTH Ltd’s docents will have activity tables set up through out the zoo. Our primate keepers will also be assisting with scheduled events.wb This is a day long event and is included with the price of general admission. If you love primates, you’d have to be bananas to not visit the zoo this day!

Giraffes, Giraffes, Giraffes

It has been a busy off season here at the zoo with the birth of 3 giraffes!

Daisy was born 1/11/14, Rocket born 2/19/14 and Maximus “Max” born 4/3/14!  All the calves are doing very well and are growing big and strong.  Hopefully we will be able to let the calves out into the outer yard for opening, but we do have to be careful of the weather and make sure it is nice and warm for their safety!

Reminder: Giraffe Encounters will begin in MAY (weekends only)

Happy 5th Birthday Molly!

Today we celebrated Molly the giraffe’s 5th birthday! She’s a favorite here at the zoo, so we made her a special birthday cake made of bananas, carrots, sweet potato, and romaine lettuce. As you can tell by the photos, she very much enjoyed it. It’s hard to believe just how big she has gotten since 2009!

We Have a New Arrival Here at Southwick’s Zoo!

Meet Rocket! He was born February 19, 2014 around 5:00 in the morning and is our second baby giraffe this year. We’re calling him Rocket because he shot right up on his feet after birth and was walking around! He is a bit smaller than Daisy was at birth, but he is a sturdy little calf and we expect him to grow tall and strong. His mother is Mazey and his father is Midas. Rocket is the younger brother of our well known giraffe Molly. Just a heads up, Molly’s birthday is next week and we have a pretty cool surprise for her!

Charmed by Charity Event

Alex & Ani Weybosset in Providence, RI recently held a Charmed by Charity event for EARTH Ltd. in their store. 15% of the sales that evening went to EARTH! We brought along two of our kangaroos: Addie, an adult female we use for our education programs, and Rufus, a male joey our staff is currently caring for! EARTH Ltd. is an environmental education nonprofit that provides us with educational programs here at Southwick’s Zoo. These include junior zookeeping, Wild Adventure Summer Programs, internships, ZooMobiles,  and more! This organization does a lot for us and our visitors, so we offer a year of free admission to members of EARTH Ltd. We definitely suggest looking into becoming an EARTH member and supporting such a good cause!

Here are a few photos from the Alex & Ani event.
